The Sarsen Way runs from Salisbury to Barbury Castle joining up lots of ancient history sites across rural Wiltshire.  Having walked the top end repeatedly, we thought we should really do the bottom two thirds.  The only slight concern was the torrential rain and flooding that had happened over the previous few days and the fact the route repeatedly crossed the river Avon.  We both owned waterproof socks so what's the worst that could happen…..

Day 1 took us from Salisbury Cathedral to Netheravon - chosen less for its historical significance and more for being halfway with a highly recommended pub.

Setting off from the cathedral we meandered through Salisbury and then up to old Sarum - the original ‘Salisbury’ and the home of an Iron age fort.

From Old Sarum, we headed up the valley and got closer to the Avon.  Well, where the Avon used to be - it seemed to be hidden under water.  And the bits of the route that weren’t, seemed a little damp.

After skirting round Amesbury, we followed the river until we reached Netheravon,  As we got there mid afternoon, the heavens opened so we sat in front of the fire trying the beer from the local brewery - Stonehenge Ales.

Day 2 crossed the river a number of times including some slightly challenging footbridges before heading past the Swan in Enford - one of the few pubs with its pub sign above the road.  Some of the roads were a little flooded...

From there we headed up onto Salisbury Plains.  Whilst we failed to spot the Great Bustard, there were lots of men in green running around and as the red flags were flying we skirted the edge of the area.  Thereafter we headed through the Vale of Pewsey and then along the Kennet & Avon canal.  From there it was up to Walkers Hill where we called it a day
